Repair Conversation
When there’s tension between you — close the gap before it widens.
You said something you regret, or you went quiet instead of speaking up. Now there’s tension, and you’re both tiptoeing around it. That discomfort is real, and it makes sense that you want to fix it. The good news: most people are actually hoping for someone to address it honestly.
The Micro-practice: Reach out in a calm moment, take responsibility for your part, and listen.
How:
- Ask for a moment to talk.
- Own your behaviour without over-explaining.
- Listen to their experience.
- Close with a simple commitment to do better.
Time: 5–15 minutes.
When: Within a day or two, once you’re steady.
Why this works: Strong relationships aren’t rupture-free — they’re repair-capable. The research is pretty clear: people with strong relationships aren’t the ones who never fight. They’re the ones who can name when something’s gone wrong and actually address it. Rupture and repair cycles actually build trust — they show the other person that the relationship is sturdy enough to survive conflict. Avoidance, on the other hand, creates a slow accumulation of resentment that erodes things quietly. Most people, when someone reaches out with genuine vulnerability and honesty, feel relieved. It’s the willingness to be accountable that restores safety.
