Presence Practice

When you’re physically there but mentally elsewhere — choose one undistracted conversation.

You’re in a conversation, but your mind is already three things ahead. You’re glancing at your phone whilst someone’s talking. People you actually care about have said, gently, that you seem distracted. The truth is, you’re not actually connecting with anyone because none of you are getting the real you.

The Micro-practice: Pick one conversation today — could be with your partner, a friend, a colleague. For 10–15 minutes, you give them your complete, undistracted attention. Phone goes away. Mind comes back.

How:

  1. Put your phone away.
  2. Make eye contact.
  3. Notice when your mind wanders and gently return.
  4. Pause at the end and notice the difference.

Time: 10–15 minutes.

When: Daily.

Why this works: Undivided attention is rare — and deeply regulating. Presence strengthens bonds without requiring more time, just better quality of it.

People feel whether you’re actually there or not. That feeling of being genuinely listened to is rarer than it should be, which means when you offer it, it matters enormously. You’ll notice them relax. You’ll notice the conversation goes deeper. And you’ll notice you feel more connected, not because you’re doing more, but because you’re doing it more genuinely. Presence is a skill, not an intention — and like any skill, it gets stronger the more you practise it.
