Energy Check

For when you notice the room has gone quiet and noticeably awkward — and you’re not sure what to do with that information.

The tone has shifted. Someone looks withdrawn. The energy feels flat or tense. You sense it, but you’re unsure whether to name it.

The Micro-practice: Observe, gently inquire, listen — then adjust.

How:

  1. Pause and scan the room. Notice body language and tone without analysing.
  2. If it feels safe, ask: “How’s everyone feeling?” or “Is there anything we need to name before we continue?”
  3. Listen without trying to fix.
  4. Adjust where possible — shorten, pause, shift format, check in privately.

Time: 5 minutes observation, then adjust.

When: Regularly in group settings, especially at the start of meetings or when something feels different.

Why this works: When people feel genuinely seen and responded to based on what they actually need (not what they should be feeling), they trust the relational space more. That kind of attunement improves collaboration and psychological safety significantly. It also prevents the silent resentment that builds when people feel forced to perform when they’re depleted. The relational field is a real thing — noticing and adjusting to it changes how people show up. Teams that do this develop stronger psychological safety, which means better communication, better ideas, and stronger relationships.
