Large problems into small, actionable pieces

Builds: Clarity
Trains: Analytical Thinking, Systems Thinking

What this feels like when it’s working

Large projects don’t paralyse you because you automatically break them into component parts. You can see a path forward even when the whole feels overwhelming.

Use this when

A project or problem feels too large to start. You’re stuck because you’re looking at the whole instead of identifying the first manageable piece.

Micro-Practice

Write the overwhelming thing at the top of a page. Ask: “What are the 3-5 major components of this?” Then pick one component and ask: “What’s the first small action I could take on this piece?” Do that action.

Why this works

Breaking complexity into components makes large problems workable and reveals next actions that the whole obscures. You can act on a piece even when the whole feels impossible.

What you’re building

Analytical Thinking – the ability to decompose complexity into understandable components and identify actionable steps. Every time you break down instead of staying overwhelmed, you’re training systematic problem-solving.

Drift Signals

  • You’re feeling paralysed by the size of what’s ahead
  • You’re waiting to “figure out the whole thing” before starting
  • You’re talking about how big the problem is instead of identifying first steps

When to deepen the skill

If complexity paralysis keeps showing up, you’re ready to build the full capability. This isn’t failure – it means you’re learning to work with complexity systematically.

Build lasting capability:
→ Clarity Pattern – Process information and prioritise effectively under any load
→ Analytical Thinking Course – Master breaking down complexity and evaluating options

The micro-practice creates movement today. The pattern makes complexity breakdown your automatic approach.
