Getting it out of your head and onto paper or screen
Builds: Clarity
Trains: Analytical Thinking, Systems Thinking
What this feels like when it’s working
Your mind feels clear because you’re not trying to hold everything mentally. You externalise complexity and work with it visually instead of internally.
Use this when
You’re trying to think through something complex while holding all the pieces in your head. You feel mentally overloaded but haven’t written anything down yet.
Micro-Practice
Open a blank document or grab paper. Write down everything you’re trying to hold mentally – tasks, thoughts, decisions, worries. Don’t organise yet, just get it all external. Notice the mental space this creates.
Why this works
Working memory is limited. Externalising frees cognitive capacity for actual thinking instead of information storage, and makes patterns visible that mental processing alone cannot reveal.
What you’re building
Systems Thinking – the ability to see patterns, connections, and flows by making complexity visible. Every time you externalise instead of holding mentally, you’re training your system to work with complexity effectively.
Drift Signals
- You’re trying to solve complex problems entirely in your head
- You feel overwhelmed but your notebook is blank
- You’re re-thinking the same things because you haven’t captured them
When to deepen the skill
If mental overload keeps showing up, you’re ready to build the full capability. This isn’t failure – it means you’re learning to process complexity externally instead of internally.
Build lasting capability:
→ Clarity Pattern – Process information and prioritise effectively under any load
→ Systems Thinking Course – Master seeing flows, bottlenecks, and leverage points
The micro-practice clears your head today. The pattern makes external processing your automatic approach.
